Verdict: 2007 Kia Rondo EX

The Gift that Keeps on Giving

When Kia first handed us the keys to the Rondo back in October 2007, our biggest debate had been what to call this vehicle. It has three rows of seats, yet no AWD or 4WD (so it isn't a crossover or an SUV), no sliding side doors (calling it a minivan is out), and a cargo area (could that make this the only seven-passenger hatchback in the U.S.?). Perhaps it would be best to refer to it as a wagon. Whatever you call it, the Rondo has proven a reliable, capable, and frugal SUV alternative. For an as-tested price of $23,495, our EX came with the 182-horse, 2.7-liter V-6, optional third row, heated (front) leather seats, power sunroof, and an AM/FM/CD system. The small-size/big-cabin combo appealed to many staffers, who went to work putting miles on the hard-to-define vehicle.

The second question that popped up about the Rondo: How long do we get to keep it? What started out as a basic one-year long-term evaluation has continued for nearly two years, making the Rondo the elder statesman of the long-term fleet. It was here for the housing boom and the recession. It was in our fleet for two presidents. It was here during the Beijing Olympics and saw two Super Bowl and two World Series champs get crowned. It's been with us a long time. That's not to say it hasn't been fun. Within a week of getting our hands on the Rondo, senior editor Ron Kiino took advantage of the generous cargo area for a fishing trip to Mammoth Lakes. A buddy rode shotgun and the rest of the cabin was filled with gear-but the Rondo easily held it all. A month later, photographer Brian Vance used the Kia to scoot up to Reno, noting that his trip "was done in record time on Thanksgiving morning; the Rondo's bean shape and dark blue paint allowed me to skip past slower traffic and fly under the radar of the California Highway Patrol." Sometimes you can drive faster in an economy car than in a sports car.

Mark Williams used the Rondo to drive his daughter and her belongings home from college in San Francisco. Even with the seats folded flat and "every inch of the rear cargo area" used, "there was still plenty of good visibility out of all the windows." However, on a run to dinner, he filled the Rondo with people, noting "with seven aboard, the engine and suspension felt tapped out. It's not made for adult passengers all the time, but it still got us there and back safely."

Everyone who drove the Rondo for an extended amount of time was impressed with the vehicle's economy and surprising spaciousness, but many were not so thrilled with its plain-Jane cabin and strange yet dull styling. The interior was noted by more than one staffer as having an odd plasticky smell. Also, many were disappointed with the seats: You sit on them rather than being nestled in them. And it didn't have navigation, an iPod/aux jack, satellite radio, or tire-pressure monitoring system. We know these aren't things you can't live without, but for a 2007 model, these were options available in similarly priced vehicles. That, plus the somewhat outdated styling, and old-tech, small V-6 made the Rondo feel decidedly behind the times. As of the 2009 model year though, all the aforementioned interior features have been made standard (TPMS) or options.

Our Rondo has been to the dealer three times for scheduled maintenance, at 7500-mile increments. The first trip came about four months into our time with the Kia, at which point the dealership changed the oil and filter, rotated the tires, and checked the tire pressures ($95.13). The adjusting clip (lets you change the angle of the vent) had come off one of the vents on the center stack, so we had them take a look at that. The techs wedged the clip back in place-the logical thing to do-and sent us on our way. By the next visit, the clip had come off again, so while it was in for its next oil/filter change, inspection, tire rotation, and rear brake adjustment ($228.12), the service advisor ordered the replacement parts for the clip. When the Rondo was getting its 22,500-mile service, the parts were in and we discovered that the vent itself-not just the clip-would have to be replaced, which would require pulling the entire dash assembly and about five hours of time. Instead, we waited an hour for the oil change, inspection, and tire rotation ($97.17) and accepted that we would find other ways to redirect airflow. Adjusting clip aside, we had zero mechanical problems and no other issues needed to be resolved.

In terms of styling, interior amenities, and power, the Rondo has fallen behind the pack. However, during our year-plus, it more than made up for those shortcomings in interior volume, frugality, and value. While we still have it, we've learned that the Rondo will be going away soon, and when it does, we'll lose a long-termer with the seating capacity of a minivan or SUV with the size and fuel economy of a compact-not a bad combination.

From The Logbook

"The V-6 is small, but is a good match for a car of this size and weight."
- Brian Vance

"This Kia is practical, useful and, best of all, cheap."
- Ed Loh

"The Rondo is an interesting combination of ample power, mundane styling, questionable interior aesthetics, and excellent functionality."
- Kirill Ougarov

"I'd feel comfortable recommending this car to someone who's looking for a frugal, spacious, easy-to-drive car that focuses more on practicality than enjoyment."
- Rory Jurnecka

Kia Models Recognized in Editors' Pick Lists

Three Kia Vehicles Commended by MSN Autos for Quality, Space and Comfort

# Spectra and Rio5 named to Top 10 Cars for Less Than $15,000 List
# Rondo a top pick for Best Family Cars for Downsizing

IRVINE, Calif., March 26, 2009 -- Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced the 2009 Kia Spectra, Rio5 and Rondo have been included in two MSN Autos Editors' Top Pick lists. Kia Spectra (LX) and Rio5 are named to the "Top 10 Cars for Less Than $15,000" list and Rondo is a top pick for "Best Family Cars for Downsizing." The three vehicles are lauded for offering attractive pricing on top of an impressive combination of quality, space, comfort, value and warranty.

"These days, consumers are looking for ways to make their money go further and the Kia Spectra, Rio5 and Rondo models are just a snapshot into Kia's full line of vehicles that make economical sense," said Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing, KMA. "By offering high-quality vehicles with wide-ranging amenities and comprehensive safety features, Kia vehicles are continuing to be recognized by top industry automotive review sites like MSN Autos."

Spectra, noted for its front and back passenger space, audio system and comprehensive warranty, meets the needs of consumers looking for the total package at a significant value. While Rio5 is the "hip younger sibling" to the Kia Spectra, according to MSN Autos, it is recognized for SIRIUS Satellite Radio, standard CD/MP3 capabilities, air conditioning and 60/40 split-folding rear seats that give way to its large hatch area. Both vehicles also achieve impressive gas mileage, Spectra with a mpg of 23/30 M/T and 24/32 A/T (city/highway), while Rio5 offers a frugal fuel economy of 27/32 M/T and 25/35 A/T.

Recognized in the "Best Family Cars for Downsizing" category that identifies those vehicles with a starting price lower than $25,000 and offers the best mix of cargo capacity, safety, reliability, features and value, Rondo is noted for its seven-passenger seating capacity along with top safety features, solid reliability, interior space and "impressive fit and finish." Fuel economy for the 2.4-liter engine is 20/27 A/T (city/highway), while the 2.7-liter V6 is 18/26 A/T.

MSN Autos developed the Editors' Pick lists by collecting feedback from industry analysts and conducting test drives. It is the largest global network of online automotive sites, providing consumers with comprehensive research, buying and ownership services.

Four Kia Models Given Best Bet Distinction by the Car Book 2009

Borrego, Rondo, Optima and Spectra All Recognized for Safety and Value

# Multiple vehicles in Kia Motors' lineup are recognized for fourth consecutive year
# Vehicles rated based on overall value including safety features, fuel economy and ownership costs

IRVINE, Calif., February 5, 2009 - After recently announcing its 14th consecutive year of increased market share, second best January sales month ever and the all-new 2010 Kia Soul urban lifestyle passenger vehicle, Kia Motors America (KMA) is proud to announce that four of its models, including Borrego, Optima, Rondo and Spectra, have been recognized as a "Best Bet" by The Car Book 2009. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Optima has been recognized.

"We are extremely pleased to have multiple Kia Motors vehicles once again recognized as 'Best Bets' by The Car Book," said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG). "It reflects the continued growth of Kia vehicles and the strong quality and value they bring to market, especially during these difficult economic times."

The Car Book 2009 is an updated and expanded guide to buying a new 2009 car, van, truck or SUV. It presents the latest safety ratings, dealer prices, fuel economy, insurance premiums, maintenance costs, tires, as well as a chart of state lemon laws, and is published in cooperation with the Center for Auto Safety.

The Car Book's "Best Bet" distinction, given annually, is based on objective information collected from government and independent sources that evaluate the safety and performance needs of the American consumer. Only cars that have ratings in all of the key Car Book categories - safety features, fuel economy, rollover, front and side crash tests, maintenance and repair costs, warranties, insurance costs, and complaints, with the greatest emphasis placed on crash test performance - are considered as potential "Best Bets."

"The Car Book has long been the consumer's best guide to smart and sensible car buying," said Jack Gillis, author of The Car Book. "We appreciate the fact that Kia continues to make a significant contribution to improving the market choices for the American car buyer."

A Tale of Two Kias: The Rondo and the Borrego

You probably hadn't noticed, but Kia's U.S. lineup has expanded to ten nameplates, twelve if you count the Rio5 and Spectra5 as separate from their sedan counterparts. Is the brand's lineup mushrooming because it's building cars that resonate with U.S. consumers, or because delusional corporate management is pushing products onto the U.S. market? A little of both, methinks.

Kia Rondo
The Kia Rondo has been around for a couple years, but this year the market has really caught up with this compact people mover. Like its only real competitor, the soaring Mazda5, the Rondo has seen sales increase this year, up 10%. Whereas the Mazda5 has sliding side doors, the Rondo has four conventional doors, but its high roof, short hood, and available three-row seating still give it the functionality of a minivan, albeit a small one. True, the third-row seat is no better than kid-sized, but the second-row, which slides fore and aft a bit, is extremely spacious and comfortable. Fold all the seats down--a procedure that requires removing the headrests--and you have a big box of a cargo area; I carried a clothes dryer inside with plenty of room to spare. Fuel economy can't quite match the Mazda's: the four-cylinder Rondo, which has only a four-speed automatic, is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway. With a V-6 (which Mazda doesn't offer), it checks in with 18 city, 26 highway. Still, compact outer dimensions can be a boon in and of themselves, for maneuverability and garage-ability. The innovative Rondo is a hit-'em-where-they-ain't entry in an overcrowded market, and represents the right kind of thinking for a brand looking to grow.

Kia Borrego
The Kia Borrego, by contrast, is a clear case of pushing water uphill. This me-too vehicle arrived on the scene only about a decade after the sport-utility craze peaked, making its debut this summer, just as SUV sales fell off a cliff. A mid-size, body-on-frame SUV with three rows of seats, an available V-8 engine, and a 7500-lb towing capacity, it's essentially Kia's version of a Ford Explorer. Too bad nobody wants a Ford Explorer anymore. The Kia version isn't necessarily a poor imitation; it's lighter, more powerful, and ever so slightly more economical (although 14 mpg city for the V-8 4x4 is nothing to get excited about). On the debit side, the ride is bouncy, the rear suspension hops around over bumps, and its third-row seat is more cramped than the Ford's and harder to access. Overall, the Borrego isn't a bad vehicle, just a pointless one, a fact borne out by the most recent sales figures, which show Kia dealers able to push only one Borrego out the door for every five Rondos sold.

Kia Rondo Wins Drive Car of the Year Award for "Best People Mover"

Have you driven a Kia Rondo yet? A little time behind the wheel is impresses most people. It feels like a large car, yet isn't cumbersome, and its tall ride height and large greenhouse offers excellent visibility all-round. These are just two reasons why the Rondo is appealing, an appreciation of which seems to be global.

The family hauler has just won Best People Mover in Australia's Drive Car of the Year awards, a unanimous decision by the Fairfax Media organization's judging panel. The Rondo, known in some markets as "Carens", bested candidates from Toyota and Peugeot to take away the honors, while beating its own parent company Hyundai as the only Korean company to win a Drive COTY.

"We are very pleased that the Drive Car of the Year judges have confirmed what we at Kia already knew -- the Kia Rondo was the best candidate in the people mover category," commented Mr. S.K. Lee, President & CEO of Kia Motors Australia."Drive judges recognized that Rondo's clever design, spacious interior and value for money delivered the best package for Australian families who need a vehicle with the space and practicality for everyday living."

The Drive judging panel looked to the Rondo's versatility, economy, excellent value for money and five-year unlimited kilometer warranty to support its case, after judging the car and its rivals on a weeklong evaluation covering some 20,000 km (12,500 miles). Key elements for consideration included driving dynamics, engine performance, price, quality and equipment offered, as well as comfort, practicality and safety.

"The Rondo becomes the first car from a Korean manufacturer to receive a Drive Car of the Year award because it offers the best combination of versatility, space and value for money, all key considerations for people-mover buyers," commented the Drive COTY judges in a statement.

Unlike many Car of the Year awards, the Drive COTY judges don't limit their candidates to just all-new models (completely revised or totally new vehicles that enter the market in a given 12 month period), but actually include all models offered in a given category, no matter how long they've been on the market. So when the Rondo won its class, it didn't just win because it only faced one or two all-new models, but because the judges honestly feel it is the best vehicle/value combination in its segment. Commenting on COTY awards given only to "all-new" vehicles, the judges said "consumers don't limit their choices that way."

The Drive COTY awards are annually selected by a judging panel from Fairfax Media newspapers, which include two of Australia's oldest and most prestigious dailies, The Sydney Morning Herald in Sydney and The Age in Melbourne, as well as the company's online automotive website www.drive.com.au, which oversees the Drive COTY awards program.

Strengthening the Drive COTY award's decision, Kia's Rondo also won the 'Car of Choice' award in the Autochic.com.au Car of the Year program. Autochic.com.au is Australia's leading auto site for women.
