Hyundai-Kia Posts Record Half-Year Sales in Europe

Hyundai and its affiliate Kia set new sales records in Europe in the first half of the year.

The automakers sold 231,445 and 200,375 cars there in the first six months. Their combined sales were up 8.3 percent from the same period last year.

Hyundai's i10 small hatchback and Kia's Sportage compact SUV were especially popular there.

"Some 56,002 units of the Sportage and 47,080 units of the i10 were sold in the first half," a Hyundai spokesman said.

But the two automakers' overall global sales dropped 2.4 percent from a year earlier, totaling about 3.94 million cars during the same period. Their sales in China were particularly sluggish at just about 800,000 units, a 6.2-percent drop on-year.

The automakers believe their increased sales in Europe have helped to offset the effects of the slow sales in China.
